Everyone can dream that’s for sure. But there are only few people who are willing to take the risk. Film makers put lots of stake every time a new movie is being produced. They stake their name, money, and time to produce the movie that will take 2 hours to 3 hours to finish. We would like to express that we are proud to all those who have their films recorded already. You guys rock! This post will be about character you need to possess in order to be a good film maker. The advice here works also for other careers.
Risk Taker
Whenever a movie is produced, there is no guarantee that you will get your investment back. Independent film makers use their own money to produce a film where there is no assurance of whether there’s a return of investment. There is a high odds that you might lose some money specially if your name is not recognized. The challenge is to take the first step and let the universe take you to your destination.
Networker
We’ve been pointing out how networking is important and a crucial part of a film maker. A 2- hour movie can take months of shooting and preparation. There are so many things you will need for every scene. You will need props, a set, make up artists and many more. To be a film maker is to be a networker of people. You don’t need to be necessarily a people person but it will be an advantage. You have to be organized in keeping contact information.
Resourceful
There will be times that you will lack resources. This is the part where your creativity comes into play. Sometimes, even if you have many contacts you will still need to be resourceful in terms of what you already have.
Brain Stormer
When it comes to producing a high quality film, the more heads the better. You have to facilitate brain storming sessions to solicit ideas on how you can improve the story further. The scenes have to be realistic, the characters need to be dynamic, and there should be justification of their decisions and the consequences of their actions. Even great writers rely on others in writing their story so give value on the inputs of other, this is not a one man’s show.
Patient
Many things could go wrong, patience is a test of character in these types of situations. Patience will take you to many places. You have to endure attitudes of different people who are part of the show otherwise you will be burning many bridges which is not good. As a film maker, you can’t burn many bridges because you’ll have to cross them over and over again.
So do you have what it takes to be an independent film maker?
